I’m a big fan of the English author Damien Boyd, and his twelfth book in the DI Nick Dixon series did not disappoint. It featured something I’d never heard of before, squibbing. This is a type of fireworks, held on a stick and in this case, let off as part of a carnival parade in Bridgwater, UK. This is south-west of both Bristol and Bath. I really enjoy looking up the places mentioned in the books on Google Maps.
I don’t want to give away spoilers, but let me just say that in this book, DCI Nick Dixon experiences career fireworks to go along with the squibbing fireworks at the carnival. It’s full on and fun to read, sorry Nick.
There is, as always in this series, murder and mayhem and some work issues and personal problems for now DCI Nick Dixon and his partner Jane Winter, who is also police. You just cannot help but get drawn in for all of it, loving some characters and hating others. This series has just the right mix of ups and downs for me.
Damien Boyd writes books that I save to read. I buy them on my Kindle app on my phone and dole them out to myself like gifts. So far, I have always been ahead of the publishing dates, so I always have one of his books all ready to go in between my other reading. Eight-hundred-page fantasy novel, then a Boyd. A Clive Cussler adventure, then a Boyd. Yeah, I’m a bit obsessed.
I really enjoy UK TV shows, especially the police procedurals like Inspector Morse, Line of Duty, Broadchurch, and Midsomer Murders, so it makes sense that I would love those kinds of books as well. My other favourite UK crime novel authors are Dervla McTiernan, Minette Walters, Jeffrey Archer and Lee Child.
I recommend this book, and the other eleven books in the series, wholeheartedly. If you decide to give them a go, look up Damien Boyd on Facebook, he’s a sweet guy who likes to interact with his readers.
I give the author, the series and this book in particular a solid five out of five.
Happy reading.
x Rachel
